New Education and Employment Initiative welcomed by Scottish Government

Following the successful launch of Routes to Rural Employment (R2RE) Angela Constance MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Training, Youth and Women’s Employment stated “The Scottish Government is committed to ensure every young woman and man has the best possible chance of succeeding regardless of where they live and what their background is. We are currently considering the recommendations from the Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce and will work with key partners to help put in a place a world class system of vocational training. “I am very pleased to welcome R2RE and hope to see it making a difference in the coming months and years.”

Project Manager Charlie Shentall said: We were delighted if not a little over whelmed with the level of interest over the four days of the Royal Highland show. We were inundated with requests for and offers of support from schools, colleges, businesses and especially young people looking for ways into working in the Countryside or recently qualified college leavers looking for help and advice about the best ways to move forward. Offers of support, financial help (R2RE is managed as a charitable initiative under TCAF) and practical help have flooded in over the past four days, including a senior engineer from a major offshore oil firm who wanted to help as well as tell his own ‘Route to Rural Employment’ story. The initiative will work with primary and secondary schools providing educational materials and references, which form part of the Curriculum for Excellence, tailored to developing knowledge of rural employment opportunities. It will develop work experience and group mentoring, as well as identifying opportunities for one-to-one mentoring. The programme also aims to provide financial and administrative support to a number of those entering the workplace on an apprenticeship or low wage so that their pay will equal a living wage.
