Smartphone users – get active on rural mobile coverage

CA and Rootmetric

We all know somewhere we can’t get mobile signal, especially in the countryside. This is frustrating and unfair, considering as consumers we all pay the same wherever we live, but get wildly different levels of service. The Countryside Alliance is working to change this and we need your help to show Government and the mobile operators that coverage is not as good as it should be. So, if you have a smartphone or know someone who does, download the free app from RootMetrics that allows you to test the speed of you mobile internet and the mobile signal strength – at any time, in any place. With your evidence we can hold mobile service providers to account on the effectiveness of their coverage.

With the push of a button, the app measures your mobile network performance and gives immediate feedback on what sort of service you are getting.

Perhaps more importantly, the results are then combined with readings from others in your area to create a map showing what mobile operator is best. This can be viewed online here http://www.rootmetrics.com/uk/ . The Countryside Alliance will also be working with RootMetrics to get information about the readings you make so we can prove that service is poor and action needs to be taken.

Depending on whether you have an iPhone or an Android smartphone, visit the Apple app store or the Google Play for Android to download the app.

Next you need to choose whether to use single test or continuous test mode. If you choose single test mode, you will have to test manually as you are out and about. If you choose continuous test mode, your phone will automatically do tests all day long – wherever you are. However, this might use a lot of data and can therefore cost you. To be on the safe side, we recommend single test mode.

If you are using an Android-based phone, you also have a third option – you can go into the Settings (the wheel icon) and turn on “Background Collection” – this will enable continuous testing of your phone signal only. We recommend that if you do this, you set the “Send Results Using” to “Wi-Fi only”, again to avoid heavy use of your data plan. Background collection will not performmobile internet tests.

Once you have downloaded the app and chosen your test mode, you’re ready to test your signal strength and data connection speed. It’s as simple as that and is very self explanatory.

Don’t forget to use the app to view side-by-side comparisons of how the operators perform where you live, and to view the map to watch as your results are combined with those of other users to generate an interactive map of how the major mobile phone operators perform in your area. It’s all colour coded, so it’s easy to see where coverage is good, and where it’s poor.
