The Countryside Alliance Political Team on meeting MPs, old and new

The Political Team here at the Countryside Alliance have been meeting MPs, old and new, since Parliament resumed. With Brexit 'done' it is imperative that we ensure that the countryside is at the forefront of politicians' and decision makers' minds. The next 5 years will go all too quickly and we need to use every opportunity to promote the countryside and its communities.

Parliament is already examining bills on the environment, agriculture and drones; all of which, without question, will impact the countryside. It is, therefore, important that each parliamentarian is fully briefed on current and forthcoming legislation and the priorities in rural areas.

Of course, there is more than just legislation to contend with. We work in an increasingly hostile arena, with animal rights extremists attaching themselves to, and in certain cases downright manipulating, any agenda they can to see the end of the rural pursuits we love. As such MPs need to be aware of the propaganda and base their views on facts and evidence.

Rural Crime is a subject that is constantly raised. We have heard of increased instances of theft, aggravated trespass, fly-tipping and even arson. This year the Police Crime Commissioner elections take place and we are working to raise awareness of rural crime and its impact on rural communities at every level of Government. Indeed, we have made it a core ask to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury in the upcoming budget.

Of course, central and fundamental to our work, is advocating for hunting, shooting and fishing. Be it the crackdown of hunt saboteurs, or the promotion of the Countryside Alliance Foundation's programmes, Fishing for Schools and Casting for Recovery.

Most pleasing, however, is that the MPs we are meeting are keen to engage with our members. We encourage everyone to contact their MP and give voice to the needs we have in the countryside and the issues that matter to us. We must not forget that we have the numbers and influence to make sure our interests are taken seriously. The Countryside Alliance, with your help, will continue to drive forward an agenda which delivers for the countryside, rather than one that ignores it.
