£40,000 raised for charity by Whitfield Clay Shoot

Around 400 shots enjoyed the spring sunshine as they competed in the Whitfield Annual Clay Shoot in Northumberland on 14-15 May.

Whitfield is renowned for some of the finest game shooting in the UK, and this clay shoot matches the challenges the estate is known for via a range of simulated stands.

The Whitfield Annual Clay Shoot, on the Whitfield Estate, started off many years ago with profits of about £50. Over the years the event has grown to be one of the largest clay shoots in the country, raising thousands for good causes, including the Countryside Alliance and the GWCT.

This year a third of the money raised – at latest count around £40,000 - will go to the campaign to save Whitfield Primary School from closure.

Committee member Jamie Stewart of the Countryside Alliance said: "I am always humbled by the generosity of our sporting fellowship when supporting community-led initiatives such as Whitfield school. The charitable investment made through the clay shoot will have a lasting effect on the lives of young people within the community and beyond."

And clay shoot chairman Stuart Maugham said: "The success of the event is all thanks to the Whitfield Estate, our sponsors, those who donate raffle and auction prizes and our competitors, as without them we would not have this amazing annual competition!"
