This is a book of two halves; literally in its purpose and in its content as it doubles up as stunning coffee table tome and also a kitchen aid. The first part is page after page of beautiful photographs taking the reader on a seven day journey of Roe deer stalking around estates in Angus and Aberdeenshire. The remaining 61 pages are delicious looking Roe deer recipes written by Scottish cookery writer Maxine Clark.

The authors capture the stunning Scottish countryside and natural habitat of the deer in the photos. The only text is the introduction describing their love-affair with both the land and experience of deer stalking. This is a photo album shown through the eyes of a deer stalker – wide landscape shots on misty mornings, close ups of the flora and fauna, as well as some quirky shots of the folk from the estates.

You couldn't be closer to the action without actually being there, and the imagery has a really natural, ethereal quality about them.

As for the recipes, they are helpfully divided up into sections of the animal – haunch, saddle and neck and shoulder and the large photographs of the dishes jump off the page. Simple recipes for Roe deer stroganoff and Roe deer, root vegetable and thyme pasties are included as well as exciting dinner party treats such as Roe deer wellington and Seared carpaccio of loin.

This is a beautiful, carefully considered book which shows the best of what nature's larder has to offer us and would make a lovely present for all foodies.
