The Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt is marking two very special anniversaries this year to recognise 250 years of the Leconfield Hunt and the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt.
In recognition of these significant milestones in the hunt’s history, a celebratory evening was held in August where supporters toasted the hunt. A special badge has also been commissioned and it is anticipated the badge will be worn by those attending the opening meet in October. The commemorative badge can be purchased for £10 plus postage by emailing speak@clandchunt.co.uk
Joint-master, Trish Morley of the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt said: “We are incredibly proud of our hunt’s long history which dates back to the formation of the Leconfield Hunt in 1773. Our gratitude goes to all those who have preserved and protected the hunt over the past 250 years, enabling us to continue to enjoy following our beloved hounds across the West Sussex countryside today. Long may it continue.”
Polly Portwin, Director of Hunting at the Countryside Alliance welcomed the celebrations:
“It is testament to all those involved in the various packs over the past 250 years that the hunt is able to celebrate such landmark events this year. Amalgamations, joint ventures and the sharing of resources can be incredibly successful for the long-term success of hunts, as demonstrated by the 50-year anniversary of the unified Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt.”
Each of the three hunts is steeped in history. The hunt as it is today, was formed in 1973 when the Chiddingfold and Leconfield Hunt amalgamated with the Cowdray Hunt.
The Chiddingfold began as a subscription pack in 1863 and merged with the Leconfield during World War II, after the 1941/42 season.
The Leconfield dates from 1773 when it was hunted by Lord Leconfield himself and latterly by successive generations of his family until the 1940s.
The hunt meets twice a week and welcomes followers whether mounted or on foot. Further details about the hunt can be found on Instagram, on Facebook or via the website.
