Changes to the Highway Code introduce better safety measures for equestrians

Amendments to the Highway Code came into force on Saturday 29th January which saw the introduction of much-needed safety measures benefitting equestrians including guidance on the safe passing of horses on the roads.

Some of the changes that you need to know include:

Walking, cycling or riding in shared spaces

People cycling are asked to:

• Not pass people walking, riding a horse, or driving a horse-drawn vehicle closely or at high speed, particularly from behind
• Not pass a horse on the horse's left

Overtaking when driving or cycling

When overtaking as a driver or cyclist, you may cross a double-white line if necessary (provided the road is clear) to overtake someone cycling or riding a horse if they are travelling at 10mph or less.

There is also updated guidance for passing at safe distances and speeds when overtaking 'vulnerable' road users which includes horse riders. The new guidance includes:

• Passing people riding horses or driving horse-drawn vehicles at speeds under 10mph and allowing at least 2 metres (or 6.5 feet) of space between you

Advice remains to wait behind them and not to overtake if it is unsafe to do so or not possible to meet these new safety measures.
