Amendments to the Highway Code came into force on Saturday 29th January which saw the introduction of much-needed safety measures benefitting equestrians including guidance on the safe passing of horses on the roads.
Some of the changes that you need to know include:
Walking, cycling or riding in shared spaces
People cycling are asked to:
Overtaking when driving or cycling
When overtaking as a driver or cyclist, you may cross a double-white line if necessary (provided the road is clear) to overtake someone cycling or riding a horse if they are travelling at 10mph or less.
There is also updated guidance for passing at safe distances and speeds when overtaking 'vulnerable' road users which includes horse riders. The new guidance includes:
Advice remains to wait behind them and not to overtake if it is unsafe to do so or not possible to meet these new safety measures.
