The Countryside Alliance welcomes the Prime Minister's recognition that broadband is as essential to UK homes and businesses as gas, electricity and water. Which is why the announcement that the Government will introduce a 10 Mb/s Universal Service Obligation for broadband is good news for those who live and work in the countryside where digital connectivity has traditionally been poor or non-existent.
We have always said the Government must be more ambitious in their broadband delivery and this is a bold step. We still await the detail on how it will be delivered and funded but there is finally light at the end of the tunnel for the final 5%.
