Green GEN announce second round of Towy Usk pylon route as community groups strengthen in opposition across Wales

On Tuesday 13 March 2024, Green GEN opened up a second round of consultation on their proposed pylon route from the yet to be approved Nant Mithil energy park in the Radnor Forest to Llandyfaelog in Carmarthenshire.

Residents have once again been invited to various drop-in sessions where Bute Energy / Green GEN representatives will be ready to answer any queries.

Disappointingly at the last consultation, many members of the public strongly felt that their questions were not answered consistently.

Whilst Green GEN press ahead with their proposals, they are yet to obtain their licence from Ofgem, who have delayed their decision on whether or not to grant them a licence. Furthermore, the majority of landowners along the proposed route have refused to allow them on to their land.

Community groups have been formed along the line, each concentrating on their specific locality, but working in unison to oppose the project. They have been joined recently by other community groups who are opposing the Galileo project set to run through the beautiful hamlet of Pumpsaint, a village rich in picturesque National Trust land and properties. At a recent meeting in Llandovery the community groups were joined by Montgomeryshire Against Pylons (MAP), who have returned to the front line of opposing pylons since their initial win against National Grid who unsuccessfully tried to do the same back in 2013.

While at present there may not be a corridor of pylons strewn across Wales, there is certainly a corridor of people working closely to oppose what they feel are unjust plans for overhead cabling, when there is the option to place cables underground. This would of course come at a cost but so would the pylons, a cost to the tourism sector, thus to the rural economy and peoples’ health and well-being in the countryside.
