Obituary: Major Gen John Hopkinson

Members will be saddened to hear of the death of Gloucestershire-born Major General John Hopkinson, who was an experienced and valued director of the BFSS from 1984-1993.

Long-time shooting writer and expert David Frost writes: "After the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988 Act John Hopkinson asked me to write a user's guide to what had suddenly become a hugely complicated and bureaucratic licensing process for shotguns. The result was "Sporting Firearms and the Law" but changed to its present title of "Sporting Shooting and the Law" with the 5th edition in 1997. From my perspective John Hopkinson was an excellent Director and I think he did particularly well with FACE."

The Telegraph's obituary records that "With a great love and knowledge of the countryside, John Hopkinson was asked to put his sharp mind and organisational skills at the service of the British Field Sports Society where he was a director from 1984 to 1993. He was a chairman of the Wye Salmon Fishery Owners Association and a trustee of the Wye Foundation. In 1995 he became vice-chairman of the Atlantic Salmon Trust."
